Introduction / History

The Koromira in PNG are an indigenous people group living in the Bougainville Province, particularly in the central mountains and along parts of the southeastern coast. Their homeland includes rugged terrain that has historically contributed to the development of distinct communities and languages across relatively short distances.

The Koromira speak a language belonging to the South Bougainville family, part of the wider grouping of Papuan languages found on the island. This linguistic uniqueness reflects the long-standing isolation of many communities in the region, allowing their identity and traditions to develop independently over generations.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life for the Koromira is shaped by both mountainous and coastal environments. Villages are typically small and organized around extended family relationships, where cooperation and shared responsibilities are essential to daily living.

Most Koromira people depend on subsistence agriculture, cultivating crops suited to their environment. In coastal areas, fishing may also contribute to their food supply. Daily routines often include gardening, food preparation, and maintaining homes built from local materials.

Community life is closely tied to kinship and tradition. Like many people in Papua New Guinea, the Koromira are often multilingual, using their local language within the community while also speaking a regional trade language such as Tok Pisin for broader communication.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Koromira are largely identified with Christianity, and the message of the gospel has been widely present among them. Church life plays an important role in shaping community values and gatherings. Bible translation work in the Koromira language has begun, but Scripture availability remains limited. This creates an ongoing need for deeper engagement with God's Word as it becomes more accessible.

At the same time, traditional beliefs or practices related to the spiritual world may still be present in certain contexts. These are typically held alongside Christian identity and are approached in different ways within the community.

What Are Their Needs?

Training and equipping local leaders is especially important so they can guide their communities with sound doctrine and biblical understanding. Strong leadership can help address areas where traditional beliefs may still influence daily life.

Practical challenges related to geography, isolation, and limited infrastructure can also affect both daily living and ministry opportunities. Encouragement and support for both spiritual and practical needs can help the community grow stronger.

Prayer Items

Pray that Koromira believers will grow in a deep and accurate understanding of scripture and in faithful obedience to Jesus Christ regarding outreach and daily life issues.
Pray for the progress of Bible translation so that more of God's word will be available in their language.
Pray for local church leaders to be well trained, grounded in truth, and strengthened in their ministry.
Pray that families will be built on biblical truth and that younger generations will follow Christ with conviction.
